Clinical Study of Astemizole-combi. for the Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis

Abstract
Allergic inflammation of the type I reaction involving the nasal mucosa is the one of the atopic oup of disease, related to the some hereditary predisposition. It can be defined as a disease giving rise t:) two or three of the ¢¥following symptoms: sneezing attacks. Watery serious discharge and nasal obstructioa due to swollen nasal mucosa. This disease is triggerd by a variety of antigens and mediated by IgE. Alth augh allergic rhinitis is usually a mild disease, it can make patients extremely uncomfortable and interfere with sleeping, eating and life-styles.
It is accompanied by secondary sinus infection, serous otitis media, pneumonia and nasal polyp, risk of developing asthma.
Histologic changes on the mucous membrane are consistent with the actions of histamine which is released as a result of the antigen-antibody reaction, and are suppressed more or less completely by adequate dose of antihistamine drugs.
The advent of antihistamine drugs 40 years ago constituted a major advance on the treatment of all argic disease. These agents were generally accepted as primary therapy for allergic rhinitis and useful ad unctive treatment for allergic dermatoses. The clinical study of non-sedative H,-antihistamine, astemi~olecombi., for the treatment of the allergic rhinitis was carried out in 30 cases.
These patients were evaluated for the degree of subjective symptoms and anterior rhinoscopic examination.
The following results were obtained.
1. After 15 days administration of astemizole-combi., the global evaluation of patients who shcwed therapeutic effect was excellent 23.3%, good 50%, moderate 20% and side effects were observed in 2 cases.
2. After 15 days of administration of astemizole-combi., the mean symptom scores for sneezing, rh:norrhea, nasal obstruction improved from 2.50 to 0.46, 2.48 to 0.32, 2.41 to 0.86 respectively and in anterior rhinoscopic examination, these scores of rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction improved from 2.37 to,( .40, 2.43 to 0.72 respectively.
Therefore, astemizole-combi., was proven to be a effective antihistamine in symptom relief of allergic rhinitis.
